Break-down of road trips and their details for each NHL team

Let's get to the point, and see what the stats are for each team. Teams are listed in alphabetical order, the distances are in kilometers (Yeah, Canadian!), so if you want the equivalent in miles, just multiply that by 0.6.

As the table suggests, not all teams have the same number of road trips. The number of road trips ranges from 14 for Arizona Coyotes to 23 for Pittsburg Penguins and New Jersey Devils.

Generally, teams in the Metropolitan division, as they are located very close to each other, have higher number of road trips and it happens a lot for them to be playing at the home arena for just one single game and then get back on the road. On the other hand, for teams in the Western conference mainly, it is easier to plan less but longer trips.

Which NHL team had travelled the most during NHL regular season 2022-2023?

Based on the above table, 11 teams out of 32 teams in the table travelled at least 70,000 kms, or about 42,000 miles, during the entire regular season, and 9 out of 11 teams that spent the most in road were Western conference teams.

Edmonton Oilers travelled the most this season with 83,583 kms (about 51,000 miles), while Flyers spent the least on roads and had an advantage over other teams in terms of not being exhausted in the road, with 54,000 kms.

Does road trips affect the success of NHL teams?

Theoretically, when you have more time for practice and spending less time on roads to get to the city that you want to play in, a team should be more successful with less and shorter road trips. However, this table suggests the opposite.

The 2023 Stanley Cup finalists, Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights, with 78,000 km and 77,000 km road trips were among top 5 teams with longest road trips and yet they were very successful. Therefore, it seems that not only long road trips won't affect severely on their performance but it might also help to get tuned one in a while and act better on the ice.
