Team AnalysisCalgary FlamesMatthew Tkachuk

The Calgary Flames have had the most Overtime losses so far in the league with 9 losses half a season down (2022-2023). During these 41 games, the Flames were in overtime in 12 times and they have lost 9 times of it. This is particularly concerning for the fans as in the past couple of seasons, out of 82 games the worst record in OT losses is for Florida Panthers in 2011-12 season with 18 OTLs and this is exactly what Flames are heading to after playing half a season.

One major issue with them is that they cannot hold their lead during the games. Statistics suggest that they have only 38.5% winning chance when they are ahead in 1-goal games! This is one of the worst performances in the league too.

One issue is the team's lack of scoring depth especially after Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk left the team in the past summer. The Flames rely heavily on their top line for scoring, and when that line is neutralized in overtime, they struggle to generate offense. This makes it difficult for them to win close games, especially in the extra frame. Moreover, Jonathan Huberdeau still is not in the level that he used to be last season, and is expected to help the team better with his passes.

Another issue is the team's defensive play. The Flames have had a tendency to give up costly turnovers in the neutral zone, which often leads to odd-man rushes for the opposition. This puts a lot of pressure on the goaltending and defense to make big saves, and it can lead to quick goals against in the fast-paced overtime period. Especially as Jacob Markstorm has not been as solid as he was in the past season.

Overall, the Flames' struggles in overtime can be attributed to a combination of factors including a lack of scoring depth and defensive lapses. These issues need to be addressed if the team hopes to improve its performance in overtime and win more close games in the future and secure a spot in the upcoming Stanley cup.
