Power plays are an important part of hockey and can be a key factor in determining the outcome of a game. A team that is able to execute successful power plays can put pressure on their opponents and potentially score crucial goals.

Teams usually develop a strategy for the situation in that they have a man advantage, or they practice it regularly to execute successful power plays. It is very tricky to score a goal when the other team is completely playing defensive, however, improving positioning and skills like shooting and playmaking can put the opponent in trouble.

There are a few metrics that can evaluate a team’s performance with the man advantage and the one that usually is referred to as Power Play Percentage.

Out of all teams in the league, the Edmonton Oilers’ performance in the current season has been remarkable with over 32% PP. Enjoying Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in the same line, they have scored 27 Power Play goals so far out of the entire 128 goals their team has scored.

2021-202226.0%2856121.4%

Oilers not only have an effective power play and score a goal every three power plays on average, but also one-third of their goals are scored with the man advantage, and this means that PP is a crucial strategy for Oilers to score a goal.

Therefore, if a team is playing against the Oilers, they have to be very careful to give them fewer penalties.

Now, let’s look at a few of these power-play goals in the previous games:
